Cargo Securing Systems - General Information

Cargo Securing Systems (CSS) are crucial components of cargo ships, having a significant impact on maritime logistics and transportation in general. They are designed to ensure the safe transportation of goods across the oceans under heavy environmental and mechanical stresses.
There is a wide range of equipment and procedures encompassing these systems, such as lashing gear, securing devices, stowage planning, and computer-based load calculations software. All these procedures collectively prevent cargo from shifting, collapsing, and causing structural damage during transits. As a result, ship companies can avoid delays, damaged cargo and money losses.

Cargo Securing Systems Types & Parts

There are different types of available cargo securing solutions tailored to various ship types such as, cargo - container ships, RoRo vessels, bulk carriers and PCTCs (Pure Car and Truck Carriers). These systems must account for vessel motion, cargo type, and of course above all weather conditions.

Below you can view some of the more important types:

  • Chain Lashings. Heavy duty securing system using chains and tensioning devices. Suitable for securing heavy cargo, such as machinery or vehicles in RO-RO ships.
  • Strap Lashings. Polyester or nylon straps tensioned with ratchets or winches. More suitable for light to medium cargo like pallets, crates or mixed loads in containers.
  • Wire Rope Lashings. Stainless-steel wire ropes with clamps and other tensioning devices. Used for breakbulk cargo where the application of chains is too rigid and not optimal.
  • Twist locks. Mechanical locking devices that secure containers at corner castings. Essential for safe cargo transportation on container ships.
  • Turnbuckles. Adjustable threaded tools used to tension chains or wire lashings. Integral to lashing systems for all kinds of cargo.
  • Lashing Points & Sockets. Fixed attachement points for connecting lashing systems. Used across all vessel types to anchor lashing devices.
