The main purpose of the equipment is to identify the exact location and severity of leak sites in any watertight, weathertight or airtight seal.

Who needs to use it?

Commonly used to test leaks in hatch-covers, doors, bulkheads, hatches, multiple cable transits and NBCW (nuclear, biological, chemical warfare) seals in shipping, oil and gas and defence.


Basic test procedure as recommended by Classification Societies for Bulk Carrier hatch-cover testing:

  • Connect Rod and Headphones to Receiver. Switch Generator "on" and place into the compartment on the base of the hold centre or use inbuilt magnets to attach to hatch coaming to be tested. Obtain Open Hatch Value - OHV (for hatch cover).
  • Close compartment. Point the sensor to the area of interest.Move sensor around the seal. Where signal is strongest, that is your leak site.

OPTION 1: decibel (dB)

  • 0 dB = watertight seal
  • 1 dB – 26 dB = weathertight seal
  • 27 + dB = weak seal compression
  • high values = full leak site

OPTION 2: Linear / numerical

  • 0 – 5 = watertight seal
  • 6 – 100 = weathertight seal
  • 101+ = weak seal compression
  • For hatch cover: above 10% OHV = leak site
  • high values = full leak site

Identify Exact Location of Cargo Hatch Leaks
Unlike hose and chalk tests, “PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT INTEGRITY TESTER” equipment allows you to identify the exact location of the leak – saving you time. Another advantage over the hose test, which only demonstrates whether or not there is contact between the rubber packing and compression bar,“ULTRASONIC HATCH LEAK DETECTOR” indicates when you actually have the required compression to prevent water getting into the hold space meaning you can identify any leaks very early and thus reduce repair costs.
Test Your Hatches Even When Carrying Cargo
“PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT” uses a transmitter (PORTASCANNER Generator) placed inside the cargo hold emitting ultrasound waves. With the hatch covers closed, a hand-held telescopic microphone is used at the hatch cover interfaces. The unit can even be used with partially or fully filled cargo holds meaning testing can be carried out at any time without interrupting your ship’s operations.

“Where a hose test is not practicable [sic] it may be replaced by [sic] an ultrasonic leak test or an equivalent test. In any case a thorough inspection of the watertight bulkheads shall be carried out.”
