The Superior Alternative to Chalk or Hose Testing
World-leading fully ABS Type Approved & RINA Accepted Portascanner® WATERTIGHT is the portable Ultrasonic Watertight Integrity indicator – for testing watertight and weather-tight seals. It is ideal for checking the hatch-covers, doors, cable transit areas, scuttles, flanges, shell doors, steering gear hatches etc. Designed primarily to enhance the ease and accuracy with which critical watertight, airtight or weather tight seals can be inspected for leak sites or areas of reduced compression in the seal.
What is it?
The most mathematically accurate handheld ultrasonic watertight integrity test indicator in the market to 0.06mm (+/-0.02mm).
What does it do?
The main purpose of the equipment is to identify the exact location and severity of leak sites in any watertight, weathertight or airtight seal.
Why is it the best?
The focus in developing the equipment was to make this process as simple, quick and accurate as possible.
Who needs to use it?
Commonly used to test leaks in hatch-covers, doors, bulkheads, hatches, multiple cable transits and NBCW (nuclear, biological, chemical warfare) seals in shipping, oil and gas and defence.
How PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT Works
Basic test procedure as recommended by Classification Societies for Bulk Carrier hatch-cover testing:
- Connect Rod and Headphones to Receiver. Switch Generator "on" and place into the compartment on the base of the hold centre or use inbuilt magnets to attach to hatch coaming to be tested. Obtain Open Hatch Value - OHV (for hatch cover).
- Close compartment. Point the sensor to the area of interest.Move sensor around the seal. Where signal is strongest, that is your leak site.
- Move sensor around the seal. Where signal is strongest, that is your leak site.
OPTION 1: decibel (dB)
- 0 dB = watertight seal
- 1 dB – 26 dB = weathertight seal
- 27 + dB = weak seal compression
- high values = full leak site
OPTION 2: Linear / numerical
- 0 – 5 = watertight seal
- 6 – 100 = weathertight seal
- 101+ = weak seal compression
- For hatch cover: above 10% OHV = leak site
- high values = full leak site
Advantages Compared to Other Methods
The most accurate unit of its type locating a leak site via visual and audible readings and identifying its extent with a definitive numerical result. Can test leaks as small as 0.06mm ± 0.02 mm. Compared to the rival puffer test technology which is a purely visual inspection.
Quick & Easy to use
It is a simple system, that is both easy to learn and operate. Testing can be completed quickly by one person and can also be done without disrupting the building occupants, unlike smoke puffer tests which involve evacuating a building or room.
Non Destructive & Clean
The Portascanner™ 520 is a completely clean and damage free technology, which can be used in the sensitive environments clean agent systems operate in.
Prevent Cargo Damage
By using “PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT” to ensure your hatch covers are watertight you can prevent cargo damage and also avoid failing inspection by the Insurance and Charterers’ surveyor.
Early Detection Reduces Your Cost
By detecting any leaks or areas that lack the necessary compression at an early stage the cost of repairs can often be reduced. Also finding any potential problems early can help you avoid damage to cargo that can prove costly to your finances.
Identify Exact Location of Cargo Hatch Leaks
Unlike hose and chalk tests, “PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT INTEGRITY TESTER” equipment allows you to identify the exact location of the leak – saving you time. Another advantage over the hose test, which only demonstrates whether or not there is contact between the rubber packing and compression bar,“ULTRASONIC HATCH LEAK DETECTOR” indicates when you actually have the required compression to prevent water getting into the hold space meaning you can identify any leaks very early and thus reduce repair costs.
Test Your Hatches Even When Carrying Cargo
“PORTASCANNER® WATERTIGHT” uses a transmitter (PORTASCANNER Generator) placed inside the cargo hold emitting ultrasound waves. With the hatch covers closed, a hand-held telescopic microphone is used at the hatch cover interfaces. The unit can even be used with partially or fully filled cargo holds meaning testing can be carried out at any time without interrupting your ship’s operations.
SOLAS Reg II-1/11.1
It states that hatches and watertight seals must be regularly tested:
“Where a hose test is not practicable [sic] it may be replaced by [sic] an ultrasonic leak test or an equivalent test. In any case a thorough inspection of the watertight bulkheads shall be carried out.”
IMO SOLAS Reg II-1/21.3 Periodical Operation and Inspection of Watertight Doors, etc., in Passenger Ships
“The watertight doors and all mechanisms and indicators connected therewith[sic] shall be periodically inspected at sea at least once a week.”
IMO SOLAS Reg II-1/13-1.1
Openings in Watertight Bulkheads and Internal Decks in Cargo Ships
“Where penetrations of watertight bulkheads and internal decks are necessary for access, piping, ventilation, electrical cables, etc., arrangements are to be made to maintain the watertight integrity.”
